Volunteers at the Tomorrows Children’s Institute (TCI) enhance the quality of life of our patients, their siblings and their parents. In addition, they assist TCI staff with a variety of tasks and assignments. Volunteers primarily work with our children, both in the Reuten Clinic and on our inpatient unit, 5 Gabrellian East. 

All TCI volunteers are first and foremost Hackensack University Medical Center volunteers. In order to become a TCI volunteer, one must first contact the Tomorrows Children’s Institute at (201) 996-5437 to have an initial telephone screening. If there is a mutual positive agreement, the next step is for the individual to contact The Department of Volunteer Services at Hackensack University Medical Center. 

Volunteer Services will schedule an interview and health screening for the potential volunteer. If a supervisor in TCI's psychosocial team is available at the time of the interview with Volunteer Services, he or she will also interview the volunteer. Otherwise another mutually agreeable time will be scheduled.

Based on the availability of the volunteer, i.e. days, evenings, or weekends, the volunteer will be assigned to a member of the psychosocial team for orientation and for on-going contact and support. The volunteer will report to this person each time he or she comes to volunteer.

All TCI volunteers must understand the importance of confidentiality and cultural sensitivity when interacting with patients and their loved ones.

They must also demonstrate competence, and possess good communication skills and active listening skills.

We recommend setting aside three to four hours per week for volunteering. Periodically we run training sessions for our volunteers.
